What does a VO2 max test measure?

2 min read · 2 sources · reviewed October 2026

In short

VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. In a lab test you exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike while wearing a metabolic mask, and the intensity increases until you cannot continue. Tests can differ in whether an ECG is included, how long the appointment is, and what the report and consultation include, so prices alone can mislead.

VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. The University of Virginia's exercise physiology lab describes it as the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance.1

How a lab test works

You exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike while wearing a metabolic mask. The intensity increases step by step until you cannot continue. A metabolic cart measures how much oxygen you use. Ohio State's lab says its test may include a 12-lead ECG, which looks at heart function.2

What you get from it

Both labs describe the test as giving a VO2 max value.1, 2 The University of Virginia lab says the test also gives a measured maximal heart rate, which it says is more accurate than age-based estimates, and that the data can be used to set heart-rate training zones.1

Length and reports

Ohio State lists a one-hour appointment and a report within five business days.2 Other providers differ, so check the length, what the report covers, and whether a staff consultation is included.

What this means for comparing prices

Prices alone can mislead. Compare whether the test is a lab measurement with a metabolic mask, whether an ECG is included, how long the appointment is, and what the report and consultation include.
